President’s Message — January 2012

Thank you all for re-joining LATA for 2012!

We hope to make it a great year filled with lots of tennis and social opportunities.  Publicity Director Jeff Sheng has already hosted our first successful social event at Gym Bar last Sunday – the Winter Team Tennis Kick-Off. Forty-five new (and old!) club members were on hand to meet and greet and watch the football playoffs.  Of course the drunken beer-pong players and free beer for the tennis club didn’t hurt one bit (thank you MillerCoors!).

Winter Team Tennis is shaping up nicely due to the quick-thinking and diligent efforts of brand new TT director Paul Yates.  He’s filled up most leagues and even expanded Wednesday to 48 players – sort of like the old days when we had 60 players. As I write this, Paul has been scrambling to salvage the Monday league, and I believe he has it pretty well worked out. I know I’m really looking forward to the Tuesday Singles league – a new format started last year by Brent Hall.

Huge thanks to John Ramos for stepping up and volunteering for Score Editor this year!  He has already shaken things up in his first week and will bring us kicking and screaming onto the social media landscape. Based on a WordPress blogging platform developed by outgoing Score Editor Sal Veas, John will be reviving our staid newsletter The Score into a living, breathing blog. Now you’ll be able to check out The Score for the latest LATA events.  Help us keep in touch with you by following us on Facebook and Twitter and subscribing to our RSS feed.  Please contact John Ramos at newletter@lataweb.com to pitch content ideas or ads you would like to place.

I hope that we didn’t traumatize our new and returning members too much last weekend at Ranking Day, so well-organized by new Ranking Directory Richard Podolsky that it went off without a hitch. For my part, I tried to make lots of mistakes so the rankees didn’t feel so bad.

New member Phillip Roth organized a Social Tennis Day last Saturday at Plummer Park.  We’ve been talking about such a format for awhile – just needed the right member to step up with initiative! Phillip invited the club’s D-E-F-G players and 10 players played a mixture of singles and doubles. We look forward to many more of these very casual, more spontaneous social tennis events.  Please contact Phillip with any questions.

The newly re-branded LATA Mitch Nutick Club Tournament (Singles) is scheduled for this weekend but may have to be postponed to its normally scheduled weekend before Gay Pride due to the inclement weather forecasted for this weekend.  We were hoping to mix up our schedule a bit and spread our tournaments more evenly throughout the year and also to avoid hosting a singles tournament over a hot weekend.  While rescheduling is never ideal, Steve Sax is doing his best to make it a great tournament.

And thanks as always to our host Norm Tucker for hosting a lovely board meeting last week.  All members are welcome to join us for our next Board meeting  at the home of Luis Melo next month, Feb. 8th.

LATA President, James Carroll
